Scope:
Over the last thirty years, metals, ceramics and in particular their composites have been widely developed, as structural materials, for use in aerospace, automobile, marine and electronic packaging industries. They are capable of providing high-temperature operating limits and resisting organic attack, and they can be tailored to give improved strength, ductility, abrasion resistance, creep resistance, thermal conductivity and dimensional stability. New matrix materials and reinforcements have been continually investigated to even enhance their strength, fracture toughness and high-temperature resistance. Some metallic, ceramic and composite materials have also been developed for functional use in electronics, biomedical engineering, etc. These dominant emerging materials with a wide variety of structural, wear, high-temperature, thermal management and even functional applications constitute a significant proportion of the engineering materials market ranging from everyday products to sophisticated niche components.
This symposium will focus on the developments of advanced metals, ceramics & composite materials for applications to engineering structures/components. Studies on developing robust metallic, ceramic and composite structural (or functional) materials through materials selection and microstructure control to improve their operating performance and reliability are welcome.
Topics:
- Design and processing of advanced metals, ceramics and composite materials
- Microstructures, phase equilibria and characterizations of metals, ceramics and composite materials
- Matrix materials, reinforcements and interfaces of metal and ceramic matrix composites
- Mechanical properties, fatigue, creep, wear and tribology of metallic, ceramic and composite structural materials
- Macro- to nanoscale mechanics and simulations/modeling of composite materials
- Physical/functional properties (thermal, electrical, etc.) and environmental reliability (corrosion, oxidation, etc.) of metals, ceramics and composite materials
